[01.12.2020]

The picturebook genre is universally recognized as a unique artistic platform that draws first-rate artists and an enthusiastic readership of all ages. It is, however, a relatively new artistic platform, which is intimately tied to the past two centuries, especially to the cultural and artistic challenges associated with modernism and postmodernism.
The 8th International Conference of The European Network of Picturebook Research focuses on the juncture that connects the dimensions of culture and history with the picturebook. Abstracts should be sent before February 26 2021.

The organizer call for papers that deal with the following aspects:

  • Picturebook histories: Milestones in the development of the picturebook genre in various cultures: its historical and cultural circumstances, histories of publication and acceptance; local and global changes; critical junctures and present directions of development.
  • The picturebook as a primary source for the study of a specific culture’s history: its social norms, ideological beliefs, its gender roles and intergenerational relations, its daily life, material culture, and perceptions of its past and future.
  • Histories of technology and production: The evolution of technology and its impact on the picturebook’s content and cultural scope; artistic and cultural prospects for the future.
  • Histories of interpretations: The influence of time on picturebook interpretation: the question of misreading visual and verbal codes of a different era, of anachronistic and nostalgic readings of picturebooks.

Due to COVID-19, the organizer realize that many of our very valued community may be facing difficulties travelling. Therefore, we plan to hold the conference in a hybrid form, with the option of participating in person or online. Papers will be presented and discussed in both lecture sessions and specified workshops, with two lecture sessions and one workshop session per day. The workshops will be held concurrently, based on the number of participants. Each workshop will have approximately 4-5 participants, and a moderator. Workshop participants will send their papers in advance to the rest of the team in order to promote fruitful discussions.
